Enea Bastianini is the big surprise at the start of the 2022 season. The Gresinini driver is the only one to have won multiple races, at Doha, Austin and Le Mans, but at the other circuits he struggled with results ranging between eighth and eleventh place , in Indonesia, Argentina and Spain, and a decline in Portugal. Bastianini believes he needs to end these vacillations to become a real contender for the title.
“If you see my results, it’s possible to play for the championship, but I haven’t had very good races either, like in Jerez, I crashed in Portimão.”recalled Bastianini on Canal +. “We have to work to be good in all situations because sometimes I find it difficult to find solutions.”
“Sometimes we are not consistent”said the Italian at a press conference. “If we have problems [sur l’avant]my driving style is not right […], I use the front tire a lot. We have to find a solution this season and I think we will find it quickly. We will see.”
“In Jerez, for example, I tried many solutions but my pace didn’t really change,” he added during his meeting with the journalists. “I think I still have a bit of work to do before I’m really competitive for a championship, but never say never.”
Bastianini doesn’t understand his strength
Enea Bastianini, on the other hand, can rely on his pace at the end of the race, which is often better than that of his competitors. Last year at Misano he made spectacular comebacks to take his two podiums, and in his three wins this year he’s finished first in the last seven rounds.
The person concerned struggles to understand this power, which is not necessarily related to the management of rubber since it was not a major factor at Le Mans: “At the end of the race I’m always faster. I don’t know why, because at this Grand Prix the tire wear wasn’t as bad as at the others. I’m here and I don’t really know.” why is this happening.”
Between this weakness and this strength, the record is clearly on the positive side, with three wins and third place in the championship, just eight points behind Fabio Quartararo: “I think my championship so far has been fantastic. Unexpected for me but also for the team because it’s a new team and we seemed to be in a bit of pain but it’s the exact opposite.”
Bastianini achieved these results with last season’s Ducati, perhaps with more limited potential than the current model, but of course more proven after using it for a whole year. At the Jerez test he was able to test the new machine’s fairing, but in the race he gave up using it. Bastianini is only entitled to one change a year, preferring to wait for a new version, which he will evaluate the day after the Spanish GP in Barcelona, and keep a more familiar machine for now.
“I knew it was the bike I felt best on. I’m glad I made this choice. I think that limited us a bit [au Mans], it’s the soft tire in front because it used to crash me. And every time I mounted the medium, I saw that it was doing well. So it’s a good omen, but most importantly, we’re starting to understand what suits me best.”
Enea Bastianini tackles his Grand Prix at home on this bike, from which he is getting better and better at the bottom line, even if he has never shone in Tuscany: “Mugello will be very important for everyone, but also for the Italians. I’ve never been on the podium at this race and for me it will be good to try but it’s too early. You have to enjoy this week – End [Mans] and not make as many mistakes as in this Grand Prix.”
