We tested: Logitech’s high-end keyboard and mouse

The Vaud manufacturer of computer peripherals has renewed its Master MX range for Mac and PC, which continues to be a reference.

The two new peripherals in Logitech’s MX-Master series.

Master series wireless mechanical keyboards, MX Mechanical, MX Mechanical Mini are great objects first of all. We have something solid between our fingers. The design, which combines two shades of grey, is just as successful. Those used to working at night will find what they are looking for with 6 backlight modes (static, pulsing, contrast, pulsing, waves, reaction, random) whose brightness automatically varies depending on the ambient light.

These keyboards with mechanical keys and switches give free rein to the “male” and precise touch. This perfectly aligns with the core goal Logitech is targeting with this product: hardcore gamers transitioning to office or creative software suites.

With the MX Mechanical and MX Mechanical Mini models, each available in three slightly different versions, Logitech gives you a choice of configuration at the time of purchase. For French-speaking Switzerland and its QWERTZ keyboard, the choice is limited to the “Silent Touch” configuration. With its ultra-flat mechanical switches (switches), it remains quieter than conventional mechanical keyboards from Logitech. It’s still largely audible, but the hissing is certainly part of the charm of this type of mechanical keyboard.

Through the Logi Plus software it is possible to customize some of the top keys of the keyboard. The MX Mechanical are charged via a USB-C connector with a promised autonomy of 15 days with backlight and 10 months without. The recommended prices start at 170 francs.

Swiss precision

An obviously winning form is not changed. With its MX Master 3S wireless mouse model, Logitech has simply improved on its Model 3 while maintaining the same form factor of this mouse, which was primarily designed for desktop computers.

Like the previous model, the mouse is very comfortable, fits well in the hand and enables precise gestures with just a few movements. We still appreciate the MagSpeed scroll wheel introduced with the MX Master 3 model, which is based on an electromagnetic mechanism from Switzerland. Its notched scroll mode unfolds smoothly and remains almost inaudible. According to the Swiss manufacturer, the normal scroll mode allows you to search through 1000 lines per second. Thanks to its optical sensor, it is possible to adjust the speed of the pointer up to 8000 dpi. The mouse can work on any surface, but it remains a mouse that should be placed first on the desk next to the computer and high-resolution screens, at the risk of losing its ease of use. On that last point, access to the side scroll bar and its convenience with regular use can be up for debate.

As with the keyboard, noise is a very present topic for Logitech to promote its mouse. The manufacturer points out that the clicks of the MX 3S model are 90% quieter compared to its predecessor. Not enough to shut them up if that’s what we’re looking for. The mouse is rechargeable via the USB-C port and has a promised autonomy of 70 days. It takes about 140 fr. for this high-end model.

Confused connection

We’ve had enough to get lost in Logitech’s connectivity and configuration software. We are not talking about Bluetooth compatibility, but about the proprietary wireless technologies Logitech Unifying and Logi Bolt and their receivers.

The range of connection options can be confusing.

Insiders will certainly find their way easily to unlock the full potential of the MX-Master range with the Logi Bolt receiver. Others can spend time with it Difference between connection types or even finding the pairing button on the keyboard when it doesn’t light up. We are still a long way from plug and play and installation with just a few mouse clicks.

The new software Logi Options+ with the built-in Flow function (to switch peripherals between different computers) could make things easier in the future, even if we’ve seen more playful interfaces.

Verdict

The quality is there, both in the new mechanical keyboards and in the mouse. I’m not sure it’s worth swapping out the MX 3 mouse, released in 2019, for the 3S model. However, these objects respond to very specific activities and/or preferences that will not disappoint the people who consciously chose them.
