Death of Lady DiWilliam and Harry: once close, now estranged

One has taken off the royal straitjacket, the other assumes his responsibility as a prince: 25 years after the death of their mother, the two brothers find themselves on “different paths”.

Harry and William were reunited on July 1, 2021 at the unveiling of the Lady Di statue in Kensington Palace Gardens.

Having supported each other when their mother died, they now live thousands of miles apart: 25 years after Diana’s death, their sons William and Harry are now far apart. While William, who is second in line to the throne, has passed the 40-year milestone and is taking on increasing responsibilities, his brother, three years his junior, has thrown off the royal shackles.

According to the tabloid The Sun, “Harry and Wills hardly speak to each other after Megxit,” Harry and his wife Meghan’s shock decision to get away from the royal family in 2020. They reside in California with their two children, Archie and Lilibet.

After their mother, Diana, was killed in a car crash in Paris in 1997, the two boys shocked millions as they walked side by side behind her coffin, fighting back tears in front of cameras. William was 15 and Harry was 12.

The two brothers attended the prestigious Eton boarding school and Harry then opted for a military education while William attended university. Wilhelm married Kate Middleton 2011 and started a family, a time when the two brothers were particularly close. “That kind of idyllic brotherly relationship that they brokered (…) did a lot to get the monarchy back on track,” historian and royal author Ed Owens told AFP.

Harry’s wedding with American actress Meghan Markle in 2018 appears to have affected their relationship. In 2019, Harry claimed in an interview that he and his brother were on “different paths”. A year later, Harry and Meghan announced with a bang that it was them gave up their roles prominent within the British royal family and then left the country.

In an explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021, Meghan claimed Kate made her cry. The worst: the couple accused the royal family of racismwho claims to have been asked about the skin color of her unborn child, Meghan is of mixed race.

Shortly thereafter, William assured in front of the cameras that the royal family was “not a racist family at all”.

“No Interaction”

Among other things, William and Harry share a dislike of tabloids after their mother was hounded by paparazzi. Harry told Oprah Winfrey he left the UK to prevent “history from repeating itself” and compared British tabloids’ treatment of Meghan to that once reserved for Diana.

In July 2021, the two brothers met unveil a statue of their mother outside of Kensington Palace, but hardly spoke to each other.

Harry and Meghan are expected back in the UK in September. They will be based in Windsor, on Queen Elizabeth II’s estate, close to William’s new home. However, according to the British press, the two brothers have not planned to see each other.

Book “Explosive”.

However, former royal correspondent Robert Hardman believes a reconciliation is possible. “They’ve clearly moved away, but they’re brothers, they’re family,” the author of Queen of Our Times: The Life of Queen Elizabeth II told AFP.

He praised Harry and Meghan’s “dignified role” during the Queen’s Jubilee visit to the UK: “To me it feels like a step towards semi-regular visits to the UK.”

But any reconciliation will depend on the contents of a confidentiality book, which Harry must publish by the end of the year, eagerly awaited by the press, who are speculating about possible reckoning and revelations.

“The book is going to be very explosive,” predicts Mr. Hardman. “I expect him to be extremely hard on the media, pretty hard on the palace establishment.”
