The squads for the 32 teams taking part in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League must be registered by midnight on Friday 2 September. We explain everything to you.

These explanations are purely informative. They are just a simplified version of the rules set out in the Official Rules of the Contest.

When should clubs register their squad?

Each club must submit two player lists, which include details such as shirt number, date of birth or nationality of each player. List A must be sent to the club association for verification and validation and then submitted to UEFA before midnight on Friday 2 September. The same procedure applies to List B (more details below), which must be submitted no later than midnight the day before each game.

When does the transfer window close?

Each association’s transfer window for teams qualifying for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League varies by nation. However, all clubs must register their squad by midnight on September 2nd. Players transferred after this date will not qualify.

Can clubs register players who took part in the qualifying phase of the UEFA Champions League or any other men’s competition?

Yes. A player fielded in the preliminary round, first, second or third round or play-offs of the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League or UEFA Europa Conference League may play in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League or UEFA play for another club Europa Conference League.

Playoff Winner

The six teams qualified via the playoffs are not required to maintain the same squad for the group stage. Indeed, clubs are allowed to register an entirely new team after each qualifying round.

Who can be on List A?

No club may register more than 25 players on List A during the season. this list must contain at least two goalkeepers.

At least eight spots on List A are reserved for “locally trained players” only. If a club has fewer than eight locally trained players in its squad, the maximum number of players on List A is reduced accordingly.

What is a “Locally Trained Player”?

There are two types of players:

1. Club-trained players – Players who have played in club teams for three years between the ages of 15 and 21.

2. Association-trained players – players aged between 15 and 21 who spent three years with another club in the same association. No club may register more than four association-trained players among its eight locally-trained List A players.

What is List B?

A player may be registered on List B if he was born on or after 1 January 2001 and has been eligible to play for the club concerned for an uninterrupted period of at least two years at the time of his registration with UEFA aged 15 or over (player aged 16 may be entered on List B if they have been continuously released from the club for the previous two years).

Each club must have at least two goalkeepers on List A and at least three in total (Lists A and B combined).

Each club can register an unlimited number of players on List B during the season. The list must be submitted by midnight the day before a match at the latest.

Can clubs change their squad during the season?

Yes, if they qualify for the round of 16. Before the round of 16, before midnight on February 2nd, clubs can validate a maximum of three changes.

These three players may have been fielded for another club in the qualifying phase, play-offs or group stage of the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League or UEFA Europa Conference League.

The limit of 25 players on List A remains in place, as do the quotas of eight locally trained players.
