praised by the editors, Asus ROG Phone 5 was the gaming smartphone of all superlatives at the time. Here it is now replaced by a ROG Phone 6 and a ROG Phone 6 Pro, two flagships with still very high-quality equipment and even more eye-catching looks. This fifth generation of the Republic of Gamers (ROG) family is primarily aimed at the most demanding mobile gamers. Remember that the Pro version we tested is sold at a price of 1329€.
You have the Coco style!
With Asus only releasing a few smartphones a year, there is something for everyone ZenFone 8 and its compact format to ZenFone 8 Flip and its rotating camera past this ROG Phone 6 Pro and its extravagant look.
The latest addition to the ROG range doesn’t go unnoticed with its dimensions of 173 x 77 x 10.3mm. Same observation once in hand as the scale shows a weight of 239g.
As far as the purely visual aspect is concerned, Asus grants its ROG Phone 6 Pro a spaceship inspired design. The photo module fits particularly well into this futuristic-looking chassis.
The Pro version includes a small screen on the back which can display various elements such as the number of notifications or an alarm to signal an incoming call.
Asus stays tuned Gorilla Glass 3 to protect the back of his terminal while the manufacturer applies the front of the Gorilla Glass Victus.
Also this year we find again the AirTriggers, touch sensors located on the right edge of the smartphone that take on the role of triggers. The device has two USB-C ports, one of which is on the left edge, allowing you to connect certain accessories like the Aeroactive Cooler 6.
Overall, the Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro slips into everyone’s hands, although it requires two-handed operation. And if its stylistic direction is not unanimous, its design is not lacking in care. We regret that it is only certified IPX4 (withstands heavy splashing but not submersion).
An extremely responsive screen
Our favorite video game titles are displayed on a Full HD+ screen 6.78 inches. The refresh rate will now increase 165Hz versus 144 Hz before. The smartphone can automatically adjust this value depending on the task at hand, but you can also choose a specific refresh rate: 60 Hz, 90 Hz, 120 Hz, 144 Hz or 165 Hz. The Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro boasts of having a touch sample rate from 720Hz be the best in the business. It also benefits from a touch latency of 23ms.
Asus announces a peak in brightness 1200nits and a minimum value of 5 nits. Whether in direct sunlight or dim light, reading is pleasant. Finally, the color calibration is precise and offers a fairly natural rendering without having to go through the settings panel.
The best stereo speakers
The audio part of the Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro is still being optimized by Dirac. It offers two speakers of very good quality a powerful sound, driven by round bass, precise treble and varied mids.

A power monster
The Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro equips itself with Qualcomm and opts for that Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, the most powerful Android smartphone platform on the market. The latter sits next to it an overclocked version of the Adreno 730 GPU. We use that too 18GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB of internal storage in UFS 3.1.
To deal with all those beautiful people and avoid overheating, Asus has revamped the GameCool cooling system in the range, which is now in its fifth generation. You can also add the AeroActive Cooler 6 to the ROG Phone 6 Pro (89€) to optimize temperature management. Asus promises a reduction in the surface temperature up to 25 °C. With this device you can also benefit from four additional physical buttons.
The Asus gaming smartphone easily climbs to the top of our usual benchmark tool rankings. In practice, The execution of tasks and even the most demanding ones occurs without slowdown.
AnTuTu, Geekbench, PCMark and 3DMark
As for its in-game performance, the ROG Phone 6 Pro the ideal companion. And with its very good temperature management, it ensures excellent long-term performance.
A software tailored to all users
We also find the latest version of Android on this flagship Android 12. Default is an overlay ROG UI which is offered to us, but you have the option to choose the interface ZenUI ZenFone, which comes close to Android Stock. Multiple modes and options allow you to boost in-game performance and customize the experience.
X mode boosts the performance of the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, Game Genie mode gives you the ability to adjust multiple settings during a gaming session, and the Armory Crate hub lets you set game profiles and shortcuts. This last area also displays the games compatible with the different refresh rates supported by the device.
Asus gaming smartphone can only be appreciated by gamers alike Its design is well thought out, its interface intuitive and its functionalities practical. Apart from the options reserved for the game, the Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro offers you the possibility to customize the elements displayed on its two screens.
The photo block of the Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro has three photo sensors. On the program we have:
- A 50-megapixel Sony IMX766 sensor with a wide-angle lens that opens at f/1.9
- A 13-megapixel sensor with an ultra wide-angle lens opening at f/2.5
- A 5-megapixel sensor with a macro lens opening at f/2.0
The front camera has a resolution of 12 megapixels and a lens opening at f/2.45.
We initially focused on the wide angle. No wonder this proven sensor produces nice pictures during the day when the lighting is good. If the color reproduction is true to the original in some recordings, there is a clear lack of saturation in others. Conversely, the ultra-wide angle is a bit too much and not the most accurate. In low light we obviously lose quality. Prefer the main sensor and night mode.

The quality of the shots taken with Portrait mode is uneven. The cropping and application of background blur are more or less precise depending on the ambient light.

The selfies are quite convincing.
The Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro is clearly not the photophone of the year, but the ROG range has never been sold for its photography prowess.
the marathon runner
The Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro is equipped with a battery 6000mAh. This 2022 edition, like its predecessor, should be the most enduring smartphone of the year, surviving no less than two days without a charger after intensive use and an automatic refresh rate. Climbing is possible up to two and a half or even three days with a refresh rate capped at 60Hz and fewer gaming sessions.
On the charging side, the ROG Phone 6 Pro can be connected to a Hyper Charge adapter 65W. It then performs a full charge cycle 40 minutes. Wireless and reverse charging technologies are absent from this model. Asus also offers various charging modes to conserve the battery, e.g. E.g. constant and slow charging or charging limited to 80 or 90%.
who in front
In this market driven by few players, the competition is logically quite weak, especially on the premium side. We will therefore use the iPhone 13 Pro Max (1259€), the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra (1259€), the Honor Magic 4 Pro (1099€) and the Xiaomi 12 Pro (1099€) embed components tailored for games.
A sunken photo part aside, the Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro is the ideal ally for the gamer on mobile. The Asus flagship guarantees a long and comfortable experience thanks to its great autonomy and its very efficient temperature management. Nothing can resist the Taiwanese war machine that manages to tame the most demanding games on the Play Store without flinching.
