A few days before Christmas, Matthias is back in his multi-ethnic home village in Transylvania after quitting his job in Germany. He worries about his son Rudi, who is growing up without him because his father Otto is left alone and he wants to see his ex-girlfriend Csilla again. He tries to get more involved in raising the boy who has been in his mother Ana’s care for too long and wants to help him overcome his irrational fears. When the factory that Csilla runs decides to hire foreign workers, the peace in the small community is disturbed and fears spread among the adults as well. Frustrations, conflicts and passions resurface and shake the semblance of peace in the community.

critical :

Cristian Mungiu offers us a necessary film for this 2022 selection, highlighting the rise of racism in the already multicultural communities where everyone felt their place and were accepted.

The director particularly emphasizes the fusion carried out by most Europeans between the Roma (Population gypsywith a bad reputation Romania) and Romanians trying to earn an honest living. The main character is called several times gypsy , which is a great insult to him, since Romanians themselves condemn the bad deeds of Roma. In the village they managed to get rid of the Roma and are wary of the idea that they could be replaced by another populationstrangerswhat they don’t know Customs.

The film highlights a scene in the village hall where each resident is asked to present their arguments for or against welcoming foreign workers into the community and we see that everything is confused, everything is jumbled in their minds. Like many people, they are afraid of the other, they are afraid of difference, they are afraid of what they don’t know… and they are willing to fight to keep it that way. While they do not hesitate to work in Germany to earn more and are unwilling to work for wages there, they are offended when others accept such conditions.

A film about immigration, about the passage of time and things that develop, about the primitive fears of men with the staging of strong and powerful women who don’t let themselves be influenced and are not afraid to put their ideas up for opinion from others. As is traditional in Romanian culture, art is very present in the film, especially the music with Csilla’s great cello melodies.
