Action Cam, Fitness, Satellite: Those Little Things You Missed During Apple Keynote

Apple is full of new features. It focuses on photography, video, sports and security, making the iPhone 14 a better everyday companion.

Tim Cook’s group delivered their back-to-school keynote yesterday. The iPhone 14 and a whole range of new Apple Watches, including the Series 8, the Ultra and the SE were the focus of this event. These new generations of smartphones and connected watches include innovative features, some of which may have gone somewhat unnoticed. Let’s get back to these details, which, however, will greatly improve the user experience.

action mode

Filming a scene while you move, or recording a performance, a sporting event, or simply your child playing in the yard can be complicated with a smartphone. After significantly improving the performance of the sensors and AI of its iPhones in recent years, the American manufacturer is now attacking video and announces the arrival of Action Mode.

This is a new option offered alongside Cinema, Slow Motion, and Time Lapse modes. Action mode offers advanced video stabilization that captures all moving scenes with supreme clarity. No additional hardware such as a gimbal is required. This technology is responsible for reducing the effects of shock, movement and vibration. As a bonus, it supports Dolby Vision and HDR. So no compromises when it comes to the quality of the videos filmed in this way.

This feature is available for the entire iPhone 14 series.

satellite connection

Like Huawei in particular, the Cupertino Group announces the arrival of SOS calls via satellite connection. It is useful in emergencies when cellular networks and WiFi go down.

To provide such a service, Apple has partnered with satellite telco company Globalstar. Concretely, the iPhone 14 thus allows sending messages to the emergency services and to the contacts configured to be notified in the event of a major problem. Unlike iMessages and SMS, they appear gray in the feed and are limited in length.

However, the manufacturer warns that this system is relatively slow and depends on the weather and sky visibility. If it would take about 15 seconds to send a message under clear skies, this delay can increase to several minutes under cloudy conditions, for example, or when the user is indoors.

Currently, the emergency satellite link is only available in the United States and Canada. It’s free for 2 years with any iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro or 14 Pro Max purchase.

Photonic engine

This new technology intervenes in the image processing during a photo recording. It goes further than the Deep Fusion introduced with the iPhone 11 in 2019 and improves the quality of photos taken in low light conditions. Note that this is not a special option offered in-camera like Action mode, rather the Photonic Engine natively intervenes in all shots.

It uses both hardware (chip, sensors), AI and iOS 16 to improve low-light shots. Apple states that it processes photos pixel by pixel, improving the texture and level of detail. This technology is available on all sensors.

Traffic accident detection

The iPhone 14 now detects when its owner is in a serious car accident. It then automatically alerts the emergency services and emergency contacts.

Specifically, the accelerometer analyzes extreme acceleration and deceleration, the gyroscope monitors sudden changes in orientation, the microphone looks out for extreme noise, and the barometer records pressure changes in the vehicle.

This service complements the SOS feature provided in the United States. However, it will be available in France on the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro.

Apple Fitness+ without watch

Launched in the US in 2020, the fitness program was previously only offered to Apple Watch owners. The Cupertino company will lift this restriction next month and make its sports training service accessible directly from an iPhone, iPad or Apple TV (but still no MacBook), also in France.

In total, the Fitness+ catalog includes more than 3,000 audio and video sports sessions (up to 4K Ultra HD) led by trainers. All types of activities are represented, from yoga to HIIT to guided meditation and treadmill, for workouts from 5 to 45 minutes, with a catalog that changes weekly.

As with the option introduced on the Apple Watch, a subscription is required, €9.99 per month or €79.99 per year.
