Headaches: Acupuncture, a miracle cure for headaches?

Is Acupuncture The Miracle Solution To Overcoming Your Headaches? According to a study published online on June 22, 2022 neurologythe medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, Acupuncture can relieve headaches in people with chronic tension headaches. At the end of the study, 68% of people who had real acupuncture sessions reported a reduction of at least 50% in the monthly number of days they had headaches.

Reduction in the average number of headache days

Tension headaches are the most common headaches and most commonly manifest as a feeling of tension on both sides of the head. They are mild to moderate in intensity with diffuse pain, and according to Ameli, these headaches are often “related to stress, fatigue, or mental tension.” These headaches are not aggravated by physical activity, sound, light, or smells, and are not accompanied by nausea. Tension headaches are taken into account chronic if they occur on at least 15 days per month.

Acupuncture is one of the branches of traditional Chinese medicine and is based on restoring the circulation of energy in the body. According to the Ministry of Health, it consists of “the stimulation of ‘acupuncture points’ on different parts of the body with possibly physical techniques (implantation of needles, acupressure devices, application of suction cups, magnets, lasers…)”.

“Tension headaches are one of the most common types of headaches, and people who experience them frequently may be looking for alternatives to medication. That’s what our study found Acupuncture reduces the average number of headache days per month for those struggling with these painful and disruptive attacks,” said Ying Li, study author and professor at the University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Chengdu, China.

Acupuncture: two to three sessions per week

In practice, the study involved 218 people who had been diagnosed with chronic tension-type headache and had suffered from it for an average of 11 years. Indeed they did Headaches average 22 days per month. Participants were randomly divided into two groups: those who received real acupuncture treatments and those who had superficial treatments.

Real acupuncture treatments involved obtaining a “de qi” sensation, in which a needle is placed and moved through the body to cause tingling, numbness, or a feeling of heaviness when pricked. Conversely had surface treatments less needle depth in the body to avoid the feeling of “de-Qi” and were therefore not true acupuncture. Both groups received two to three sessions per weeka total of 20 sessions, for two months and were followed up for a further six months.

Headaches: 20 to 7 days per month thanks to acupuncture

As a result, the researchers found that the number of monthly headache days gradually decreased after treatment, both in people who have received real acupuncture treatments and those who have received superficial acupuncture treatments. In people who received real acupuncture treatment, the number of headache days decreased from 20 days per month at the beginning of the course to 7 days per month at the end of the course. In those who received superficial acupuncture, headache days also decreased, but less so, from 23 days per month at the start of the study to 12 days per month at the end of the study. The benefits of acupuncture for tension headaches are therefore real.

Although this study showed that Acupuncture can relieve headachesMore research is needed to determine the long-term effectiveness of acupuncture and how it compares to other treatment options,” concluded Ying Li.
