Moravian Slovakia – Nice, facts and statistics | UEFA Europa Conference League

Czech Cup winners Slovácko are attempting to shake off the last place in Group D of the UEFA Europa Conference League by hosting Coupe de France finalists Nice on Matchday 3.

Six goals were scored in each of Slovácko’s first two meetings, a 3-3 home draw against Partizan followed by a 4-2 defeat in Cologne which saw Jan Kalabiška score his third goal of the group before Milan Petržela temporarily equalized for the Czech team.

Nice drew 1-1 in their first two meetings, at home with Köln and away with Partizan, where the Aiglons led for almost an hour thanks to a second-minute goal from England’s Joe Bryan.

past meetings

Slovácko’s last four encounters against French teams have all been in the UEFA Intertoto Cup (win 1, draw 1 and lose 2), with the only win coming in 2001, when they beat Rennes 4–2 at home. The other club did not score three matches.

Nice have also played four games against Czech clubs but have yet to record a win (D2 L2). Both games were lost to Slavia Prague (2-3, 1-3) in the 2020/21 UEFA Europa League group stage.

About the teams

The third time was Slovácko’s fortune in last season’s Czech Cup final, when they beat Sparta Prague 3-1 to lift their first major title after defeats in 2004/05 and 2008/09.

The Czechs made their debut in Europe’s major club competitions last season – after three consecutive Intertoto Cup games from 2001-03 – but lasted just one game, losing to Lokomotiv Plovdiv on penalties in the UEFA Europa Conference League second qualifying round (0:1, 1:0).

This season, Martin Svědík’s side lost their opening game in European competition again, losing to Fenerbahçe (0-3, 1-1) in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League but bouncing back and beating AIK Solna convincingly in the play-offs UEFA Europa Conference League qualifiers (3-0, 1-0) and secures a first appearance in the European group stage.

The team from Uherské Hradiště in the south-east of the Czech Republic are unbeaten in their four European home games in the past two seasons (2 wins, 2 draws).

Nice finished fifth in Ligue 1 last season under coach Christophe Galtier. Les Aiglons also lost the Coupe de France final 1-0 to Nantes, securing their place as France’s representative in the UEFA Europa Conference League. Les Aiglons did not play in European competitions in 2021/22.

Nice won the UEFA Europa Conference play-off qualifier this season, which sees Swiss coach Lucien Favren back at the club (after a first spell between 2016 and 2018), whom he managed in successive UEFA Europa League group stage campaigns League against Maccabi Tel-Aviv lost the first leg in Israel 0-1 but won the second leg 2-0 after extra time.

Nice have won just one of their last 12 European away games (U2 L9), although a Matchday 2 draw in Belgrade ended the club’s seven-game losing streak outside France.

Do we know each other…

Nice’s Aaron Ramsey opened the scoring for Wales in their 2-2 draw against the Czech Republic in a 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier on October 8, 2021 in Prague.

Nice goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel played for Denmark as they beat the Czech Republic 2-1 in the quarter-finals of UEFA EURO 2020 in Baku. Earlier this year, however, he was beaten against Czech opponents when his side Leicester City were knocked out by Slavia (0-0, 0-2) in the 2020/21 UEFA Europa League round of 16.

Nice coach Favre oversaw the Borussia Dortmund team that beat Slavia twice (2-0, 2-1) in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League group stage.

Kalabiška is joint top scorer in the group stage of the UEFA Europa Conference League this season with three goals – along with Fousseni Diabaté (Partizan, Group D) and Álex Baena (Villarreal) and Mikael Ishak (Lech Poznań) in Group C.

Slovácko are one of nine sides making their European group stage debut in the UEFA Europa Conference League this season. The others are RFS (Group A), Silkeborg (B), Vaduz and Dnipro-1 (E), Djurgården (F), Ballkani (G), Pyunik and Žalgiris Vilnius (both H).
