The semi-finals of Top Chef Season 13 will be broadcast this Wednesday, June 8 at 9:10 p.m. on M6. While we wait to find out who will be eliminated from Louise, Sébastien or Arnaud at the gates of the final, we invite you to rediscover candidates from previous seasons. Have you ever dreamed of trying a plate prepared by them? If so, you know there are some chefs in your area… We picked eight. Of course, this list is far from complete!
1/ In Burgundy, Romain Tischenko, Season 1 (2010)…
We hardly remember him, yet Season 1 contestant Romain Tischenko was the first winner of Top Chef by beating a certain…Pierre Augé in the final. Today, after spending more than 10 years at “Galopin” and “La Cave à Michel” in Paris, this discreet 30-year-old is thriving in his concept of the restaurant at home. He is now established in Burgundy with the RàDe. Appointed director of the “Gastronomic Village” in Dijon last month, he also creates ephemeral establishments from time to time, as during his collaboration with the Chanzy house in Puligny-Montrachet in the summer of 2021, reports Le Bien Public. his kitchen? Always focused on the terroir and the good products, like his plate of squid, burrata and squid.
2/… and Joy Astrid Poinsot, Season 7 (2016)
During her participation in “Top Chef” she did not fail to show her energy and spontaneity, her “joie de vivre”, according to her parents, to the point of angering some viewers… Joy Astrid Poinsot, Season 7 contestant, daughter of Armand Poinsot and Monique, still operates “Chez Camille”, the restaurant where their father worked for forty years. Located in the medieval town of Arnay-le-Duc in Burgundy, she inherited it with her husband Alexis Blanchard, also a chef, with whom she continues the family story. What are we eating there? Several variations of pies in crust, Bresse poultry or a Pithivier of duck and foie gras served with crispy and melting potatoes.
3/Anissa Boulesteix, season 10 (2019), between Savoie and Var
Alongside emblematic candidates such as Samuel Albert (the winner of the edition), Florian Barbarot, former student of the Grenoble (Isère) cookery school, or Merouan Bounekraf, author of this fabulous answer to Hélène Darroze – “Merouan, is that Breton? ”, ”Better beur-ton than Breton!” – Anissa Boulesteix participated in the 10th season of the culinary competition. The candidate, assistant chef of 3, 4 and 5-star establishments in the Alp’Azur group, such as “Les Airelles” in Courchevel (Savoie) and “Pan Deï Palais” in Saint-Tropez (Var ), has evolved: She is now the CEO of the company that owns these palaces. On the menu ? Sunny dishes like eggplant and candied vegetables with piquillo pepper coulis or shoulder of lamb with candied marjoram for 72 hours.
4/Xavier Koening, season 6 (2015), in Alsace
He is the only contestant to have doubled: Xavier Koening, 19, won the sixth season of Top Chef a few months after winning Philippe Etchebest’s show Objectif Top Chef. Five years later, the Alsatian opened his first restaurant in Colmar, “L’incontournable”, with his wife Fiona, despite a slight delay due to the pandemic, reports the news from Alsace. The chef does not mention his name on the shop front. He prefers to only highlight his recipes, such as his perfect egg, carrot and black curry, his oxtail confit, new jus made with onion and herb oil, or his dessert combining fondant celery and coffee cream.
5/ Franck Pelux, Season 8 (2017), in Lausanne (Switzerland)
Franck Pelux, who comes from Autun in Saône-et-Loire, has been running the restaurant “La Table” in the Lausanne Palace (Switzerland) since 2020 with his partner Sarah Benahmed. The work of Drômoise and Bourguignon was rewarded with a Michelin star in 2021. The chef, finalist of the eighth season – he had failed against Jérémie Izarn – had earlier brilliantly taken over the Strasbourg institution “Au Crocodile” and returned it a Michelin star , recalls the Journal de Saône-et-Loire. In his dishes we find inspirations of Asian or Mediterranean origin, like brown crabs reminiscent of a Hong Kong alleyway or red mullet like a bouillabaisse, stewed fennel and a full-bodied drink.
6/ Jérémie Izarn, season 8 (2017), in Isère
With his cap on, 27-year-old Isérois, who was part of Philippe Etchebest’s brigade, won season 8 of the M6 cook-off. Since then he has been the chef of “La Tour des sens” in Tencin in the Belledonne massif. His work was crowned with a Michelin star in 2019, was lost in 2021 and has not been found since. But with or without a Red Guide award, according to Le Dauphiné Libéré, this creative and daring chef will continue to shake the codes of gastronomy. On the menu he offers a cube of duck foie gras and its runny kiwi heart, duck and leek aiguillettes served with apple and hibiscus compote and sweet and sour duck juice with honey, or a Brillat-Savarin IGP with a CBD cream, hemp flower, twisted with kumquat.
7/ Cyrille Zen, season 3 (2012), in Puy-de-Dôme
Season 3 finalist Cyrille Zen, 32, became the first contestant already awarded a Michelin star to enter the competition. But in the face of a certain Jean Imbert, now in charge of the Plaza Athénée, Auvergnat, now in his forties, had to bow. In the summer of 2018 he decided to leave his starred restaurant “La Bergerie de Sarpoil” and give up his macaron. Since 2014 he has lived in Montpeyroux, 20 kilometers from Clermont-Ferrand, in the kitchen of his second restaurant, the “Bistrot Zen”, whose menu he changes regularly. At the moment it is possible to order the zucchini carpaccio, fresh goat cheese with herbs and roasted hazelnuts, the pork belly, its seasonal vegetables and its spiced juice or the chocolate and raspberry finger. Since 2020 he has also been a cooking teacher at the Sacré Coeur hotel management school in Saint-Chély-d’Apcher (Lozère).
8/Florent Pietravalle, season 3 (2012), in the Vaucluse
The Cast of Top Chef Season 3? A real gold mine! In addition to Jean Imbert and Cyrille Zen, Norbert Tarayre, Juan Arbelaez, the Italian Denny Imbroisi, the Lyonnaise Tabata Mey (Bonardi), Noémie Honiat and Florent Pietravalle also wore the famous apron that year. The Avignon-born chef, now in his thirties, won a Michelin star on the piano for “La Mirande” in 2019, five luxurious stars in the City of Popes. In January 2021 he was also awarded a green star, which rewards his sustainable and responsible approach to cooking. At his table you can enjoy caviar paired with horseradish yoghurt and beef garum, pumpkin with bacon, citrus and carrots, or barrel-aged strawberries in elderberry vinegar.
