Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton were at the Cannes Film Festival this year to present a preview of “Three Thousand Years Await You,” which opens in theaters August 24. Directed by George Miller (“Mad Max”) and a blend of fantasy and romance, the film stars Alithea Binnie (played by Tilda Swinton), a lonely Brit who thinks she has the answer to everything. On a trip to Istanbul, she discovers an old bottle. The result is a genie (Idris Elba) who grants him three wishes. Without a desire to love or be loved, this woman remains unable to desire even one.
To think that Tilda Swinton took her role very seriously. When asked what wish she would have made in his place, she replied in a split second, “Not to answer that question.” Idris Elba quickly picked up the slack, adding awkwardly, “Maybe a little more air conditioning in that bedroom? Despite that somewhat dangerous start, the two actors quickly relaxed and even dropped a few valves.
“Three thousand years are waiting for you” is a magical, sensual and very poetic film. What did you like at the beginning?
Tilda Swinton: Well, George Miller, who’s quite a magical, sultry character, by the way, and what was the other word?
TS: He is always poetic. He is all of these things. If he asked us to do a movie in a phone booth, we probably would have done it. (Laughs.) But the idea of the journey, the idea of making a film about the value of storytelling from a filmmaker of his caliber, that’s just glorious.
Her character, Alithea Binnie, is a very smart and down to earth woman. She knows what she wants, but this journey changes her mind a bit, doesn’t it?
Yes. At first, she doesn’t realize that sometimes being crazy can be positive. You know, there’s something very powerful about being thrown off course, not being able to express yourself and not understanding that it’s a precious place. But life presented her with a series of challenges that she chose to avoid. And her encounter with the genius who literally comes from a completely different place will challenge her. His response to challenges is so different. He’s so vulnerable. He’s so open. He’s so full of doubts. He’s an inspiration to her. This irritates her at times, but ultimately inspires her.
Idris Elba, what did you like about the brilliant character?
Idris Elba: I liked this opportunity to play a genius making tropes (Note: Use of a word or phrase figuratively), clichés and that has been presented so many times in different ways. Led by George and Tilda and through our combined effort, we’ve created something honest that feels restless and otherworldly. It was really exciting to do that. I especially liked that the director allowed me to create the character with him.
The costume details are beautiful. Idris Elba, you are often half-naked but with beautiful scales on your legs. How long before you’re ready?
TS: Zero because the scale is real. (Laughs.)
IE: Exactly, they’re under my pants right now. No, actually I was wearing some kind of leggings with those pretty scales. They then added special effects. So all I had to do in the morning was put on these pants and voila.
Several names are still in the running to become the future James Bond, and your mom really hopes you are. No information about this?
IE: Unfortunately, not. I know absolutely nothing…
