iOS 16: the 10 hidden features that will simplify your life

iOS 16 has been available in beta since July 11th and brings many new features including a new lock screen that is well promoted by Apple. Added to this are a dozen small very practical functions that the brand has communicated little about.

In early June, Apple introduced iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 during its WWDC conference. Future versions of the iPhone and iPad operating systems will bring some notable new features, such as a new lock screen, the ability to change an iMessage, and a multi-window multitasking system for the brand’s tablets. These updates will be available to all users in September, but the most impatient among you can already install them. Beta versions have been available since July 11th, just go to to download them.

Numerama has been testing future versions of Apple’s OS since early June. While it’s still too early to release anything that could be considered a test (we’re awaiting the final versions), we’ve spent the past few weeks listing all the fun little things we’re seeing in iOS 16 and iPadOS discovered 16. Here are ten.

1 – The Wi-Fi password is finally accessible

15 years after the first iPhone, Apple has finally realized that not all customers know the WiFi password by heart.

In iOS 16 Settings, when selecting a network, you can view its authentication key in plain text (after Face ID, Touch ID, or Password verification). It’s possible to copy and paste it to send to someone who doesn’t have an Apple device (sharing a Wi-Fi password between Apple devices is automatic).

2 – Face ID works while lying down

Since the iPhone X, Apple has allowed you to unlock your smartphone, access a secure application or pay with its Face ID facial recognition system. Oddly enough, Face ID now only works when you hold your smartphone upright.

With iOS 16, this error finally disappears. iPhone 12 and 13 (not X, XS, XR and 11 😔) can now recognize you if you hold them horizontally, for example in a game or in bed.

3 – Your bank card cryptogram has finally been saved

Some may be scared reading this subtitle, but this novelty is still very useful. Now, when a website asks us for our credit card information, Safari can complete everything, including the CVC (cryptogram) field. On iOS 15, this field is always empty.

4 – The result of a soccer game on the lock screen

Summer obliges, there are not many sports competitions at the moment. At the start of the school year, the new sports pinning function of iOS 16 should become more practical. Search for the name of your favorite team in Spotlight and add the currently broadcasting game to your lock screen. A widget is updated throughout the game, with real-time score, without application.

5 – A wallpaper that changes every time

Since iPhone OS 1, you can only choose one wallpaper on your iPhone. With iOS 16 it’s possible to choose a selection of photos or let an artificial intelligence do it for you. You can set how often you want your wallpaper to change. This can be done each time the screen wakes up if needed. Interesting if you want to use the background images with the panoramas taken by James Webb, for example.

6 – Weather: temperature curves

It is especially noticeable in the middle of a heat wave, iOS 16 allows you to open special modules in the application weather report. If you click on the temperature program you now have access to curves showing the course of degrees throughout the day.

7 – Haptic feedback on the keyboard

On Android it has been possible for a number of years to make the keyboard vibrate as soon as a key is pressed. This wasn’t pleasant at first, but has become so over time thanks to the advent of haptic motors that enhance vibration and give the impression of actually pressing a button.

With iOS 16, you can do the same on iPhone. This is an option that can be activated in the settings, but once selected, the smartphone vibrates very slightly when typing. On our side we love it.

8 – The iPad screen can display more things

A novelty reserved for iPads, also stolen from Macs, the possibility of increasing the surface available on the screen. How it works ? Icons and text shrink to make room for other elements. If you want to see well and multitask Internship Managerthat could be very handy.

9- Voice notes in iMessage change theme

Real sham novelty: Voice memos are now hidden in the Applications section of iMessage. Clicking the blue voice memo icon gives you access to a true full-screen interface, which wasn’t the case before. Unfortunately there are no other new features. We still can’t listen to a message before sending it, or change just part of it.

10 – Masked photos protected by Face ID 😏

Good news if you have file To hide important photos, iOS 16 automatically protects some folders in your photo library with a password. It’s now impossible to access hidden photos or Trash without going through Face ID, Touch ID or your iPhone’s passcode.

Bonus: the other cool little novelties

Since we couldn’t include everything in this selection, we’ll mention some of the other new features of iOS 16 coming this fall. For example, there’s canceling an email within 10 seconds of sending it (a kind of countdown), the ability to customize spatial audio with AirPods by scanning your ears with the TrueDepth camera, or the instant captions that just in English, add text to anything playing through your device’s speaker. These features are already available in the iOS/iPadOS 16 beta.
