In this week’s True of False Junior, Year 3 students at Nicolas Flamel College in Pontoise in the Oise wonder at Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter, which is far from over. They also wonder about electronic chips implanted in the brain to remotely control computers and the reality of artificial wombs that would have been created in China.
To answer their questions, we asked Olivier Lascar, journalist and editor-in-chief of Science et Avenir’s digital department. It will be released on June 9th Investigation of Elon Musk, the man who defies science (Alisio Sciences).
Is Elon Musk about to take over Twitter?
Aimé Jean wonders if it is true that Elon Musk has decided “suspend the takeover of Twitter and why?“
Olivier Lascar confirms that Elon Musk has decided to make the acquisition of Twitter subject to certain new conditions. “Questionable, explains the journalist The number of fake accounts on Twitter is estimated by the social network at 5%, while Elon Musk estimates it would be up to 20%. Olivier Lascar explains that the multi-billionaire demands that the leaders of Twitter ” put their own data on the table to validate the percentage of fake accounts on the platform, except that Twitter is currently not doing this and therefore Elon Musk has decided to freeze the process.“
However, Olivier Lascar states that “But that doesn’t mean that Elon Musk won’t buy Twitter, because all of this could well be a maneuver on his part, for example to lower the value of Twitter on the stock exchange and thus buy the social network cheaper.“
Is Elon Musk developing a brain chip to control computers with thoughts?
Rougario wonders if it’s true”that Elon Musk is developing a chip that is implanted in the brain to control objects through thought“?
“It’s true,” replies Olivier Lascar. “Elon Musk is developing a brain chip, which is a very small device, the size of a coin, that is placed in the brain to create a kind of interface between our thoughts and computers, machines and why not objects.“
He does this through a company called Neuralink. The first tests were carried out on animals. In videos we see for example “a monkey who controls certain elements of a video game through thought, thanks to an electronic chip implanted in his brain“, explains Olivier Lascar. The specialist journalist specifies that “The philosophy of these chips is to let thoughts move things later, such as objects, for example a wheelchair, which could be very useful for people with disabilities“.
Before you get there, however, Neuralink is also at the heart ofœur some controversy regarding animal testing. Olivier Lascar explains “that some monkeys that were the subject of the experiments died in terrible agony, a medical association in the United States revealed.”
Has China created an artificial womb?
Alexander heard that China “would have created an artificial womb” and he wonders if it’s true.
Olivier Lascar answers him “we cannot say that, but what is true is that the Chinese media recently reported on an artificial intelligence program that would be able to automatically adjust various factors (oxygen levels, sugar levels, pressure) exerted on a small developing organism inside what may be called an artificial womb.“
Olivier Lascar explains that it is indeed an issue “The scientists are currently working on: building devices that are artificial wombs, that is, places that replicate conditions comparable to those in the womb, with a fluid similar to amniotic fluid, in which we find the necessary nutrients for the fetus to develop can.“
Finally, Olivier Lascar recalls that this scientific research raises certain ethical questions: “Do we have the right to do this? Aren’t we going a little too far?” And he specifies “that in science there is always the question of the red line that must not be crossed and we can ask ourselves the question in these subjects, aren’t we going a bit too far?“
